The hotel rumour mill is at it again —this time with a second Thompson Hotel on its way to Toronto. According to a Curbed tipster, Yorkville's Howard Johnson's could be turning into a Thompson Hotel, not a completed surprise since a condo/hotel proposal for development has been in the works for years. Freed Developments who own the property along with architectsAlliance have a proposal for a 28-storey building with 41 residential units and 80 hotel suites, design renderings are included with the application. While a rep from the Thompson didn't respond for comment, a Howard Johnson's associate said he was unsure what was happening to the hotel and "a proposal for development had been outside the hotel for years." He wouldn't confirm if a Thompson was moving in.
The HoJo at 89 Avenue Rd. has never been one of the city's finer accommodations. Former guests on TripAdvisor commented the aged hotel could use "a facelift, very outdated" while another guest "loved the location but thought the room was just terrible." The lodging has been in Yorkville for years and although it's in a prime location, most could agree it could use a major revitalization. If the rumours are true, this would be the second Thompson for Toronto. The first boutique hotel on Wellington and Bathurst Street has one of the city's best rooftop infinity pools, comfort food from the 24-hour Thompson Diner and a penthouse for $4,500 per night.
