Wait, There's a Condo in Yorkville Under $400,000?

The Cumberland at Yorkville Plaza, the area's latest development at Avenue and Cumberland, has availability and units priced as low as $400,000. Hold the gold-plated Yorkville phone! How can a condo in one of the city's most expensive neighbourhoods be under a million dollars? The 32-storey tower with adjoining two glass buildings is currently under construction and could be Yorkville's cheapest new pad. For that price, don't expect a large suite with a walkout terrace, even if the new place is right next to Whole Foods Market and Mark Wahlberg's new Hazelton Avenue penthouse. The unit might be a mini 385 square feet, but the amenities are large. There's a fitness auditorium, yoga studio, an aquatics centre with an indoor pool and walkout sun lounge.

Built on the former site of the Four Seasons Hotel, the project was originally designed as a 58-storey building, twice the height of the hotel. City councillors were concerned with the height and density, fearing "the towers could sully the silhouette of Queen's Park," casting too long of a shadow into the residential neighbourhood. "Can you imagine building a row of condominiums behind the Eiffel Tower?" said Trinity-Spadina Councillor Adam Vaughan when the project was first announced. Today, some Torontonians aren't impressed with the new build calling it "one of the ugliest towers proposed in recent memory!" and "confusing for the area."
