There's a Skyscraping Tiki Head Coming to Front Street

Developer Cadillac Fairview has released a new set of renderings for 156 Front West, an incredible office tower planned for the block just west of University Avenue. The current century-old brick building on the site—home to sports-fan favourite beer'n'pizza joint Joe Badali's—will be demolished; according to the current plan, two of its external walls will be incorporated into the new tower's podium. When Cadillac Fairview first announced this project in 2011, their renderings showed a plain glass tower that was indistinguishable from dozens around town, pretty much no one was impressed. CF ended up scrapping that plan, chose a different partner, Chicago-based AS+GG Architecture, and this weirdly-cool white monolith is the result. There's something about that eastern face that evokes the giant heads of Easter Island, or Tiki cocktail mugs. Maybe they should put a massive paper umbrella on the roof.
