The Curbed Cup, our award to the Toronto neighbourhood of the year, is kicking off with 16 'hoods vying for the prestigious fake trophy. This week we'll have two matchups per day, and all the results and the full tourney bracket will be reviewed shortly. Voting for each pairing ends 24 hours after it begins. Let the eliminations commence!
Yonge & Eglinton: Yonge & Eg. is midtown Toronto's central hub for busy professionals, growing families and those who are just young and eligible. It's a great neighbourhood to grab a sweet treat at the Cupcake Shoppe, take in a movie or go for a greasy brunch at Uncle Betty's Diner. Yonge & Eg. has some cool new developments coming to the area like the condos at 155 Redpath, a 36-storey building with a rooftop pool and a Loblaws; the E Condos with its crazy fish bowl infinity pool and the proposed and controversial Alaska Condos by architect Will Alsop who also designed the OCAD tabletop. The Yonge Eglinton RioCan Centre is getting a major makeover with a revitalization and expansion to the retail podium and existing office towers, additional community space and a rooftop garden terrace. Underground, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT which will run across Eglinton Avenue between Weston Road and Kennedy Station, will get you to the area quickly. Of course, you'll still have to wait until the subway completion date in 2020.
Danforth: Get your Greek on in the Danforth with a lively neighbourhood filled with enthusiasm and more moussaka than you'll ever eat. This year, Toronto's Greektown celebrated its annual Taste of the Danforth with its festive tradition of crowds of people and tons of food. Pape Station got a facelift with a new glass facade and a makeover inside the station and the Big Carrot, the area's natural and organic food market, celebrated its 20th anniversary. The movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, was filmed in the area with classic restaurants like Pappas Grill and Zorba's making a cameo in the flick. Come to the area to relax on the patio, stroll the shops and of course, eat.
