Friends of Kensington Market are seeking support in their ongoing battle against RioCan's proposal to build a Walmart at 420 Bathurst Street. RioCan, the real estate investment firm representing the retail giant, announced their proposal last year for a three level retail complex which includes a second floor Walmart and other stores. Residents are concerned the 129,000 square foot development will increase traffic on Bathurst and will have a negative impact on smaller independent retailers in the market.
What's happened since? There is now a one-year freeze on all development applications in order to study the Bathurst corridor and create guidelines for development. RioCan appealed the by-law to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), which means the proposal could be decided at an OMB hearing. Friends of Kensington Market are looking to raise $120,000 for their campaign.
